NASCAR Flags have been around as long as the auto racing sport itself. Before there were two radios in NASCAR race cars, the only method of communication with drivers during the extremely strong racing action was with the use of colored flags. These large, colorful flags gain the attention of drivers and are easy to see.

Almost all auto racing series uses the same combination of flag colors. NASCAR drivers can see the status of the race looking at the flag. Just as the signal lights at a traffic intersection to let drivers know what to do, flag race conditions communicated to NASCAR drivers.
