Winston Cup Series

Super Close Call – Aaron’s 499 – Winston Cup Series – #3

It's official. After weeks of hints and speculation, Tony Stewart will leave Joe Gibbs Racing after the 2008 season for the Sprint Cup Series. He another year on his contract with JGR, but as Casey Mears, NASCAR pacts are made to be broken.

The new Toyota JGR is rumored that the main problem, but Stewart, 37, wanted control of their future above all. He got it when it reached a deal with Haas CNC Racing to buy a 50 percent the rookie race team. The name of the team next year will be Stewart Haas Racing. Equipment and technical support still coming from Hendrick Motorsports, and sponsors and other details soon.

Stewart ends the current season of Sprint Cup behind the wheel of the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota. Will be promoted at an event more nationally for JGR, piloting the No. 20 Old Spice Toyota on August 16 in Michigan. His successor in the 20 car (s) is likely to be teenage prodigy Joey Logano, now GameStop leads the No. 20 Camry for JGR in the Nationwide Series. Logano became the youngest winner in series history when he took the checkered flag in June in Kentucky.

Stewart already owns some Sprint Car teams and three race tracks. Gene Haas, the current owner of the Cup team, began serving a sentence of two years in prison in January for tax evasion. His wife, Margaret, served as interim owner. Current Sprint Cup drivers are from Scott Riggs Haas CNC, in the No. 66 Chevrolet, with Jason Leffler, Johnny Sauter share the No. 70. The general manager Joe Custer owns a piece of No. 66.

Stewart Haas is expected to be a two-car operation in '09, with "Smoke" conduct a full-time driver of the car and the other unidentified. Rumors have fellow Hoosier Ryan Newman, the Daytona 500-winning '08 Penske aboard when his contract expires after this season.

As twice Champion Cup Series is considered one of the two or three drivers in NASCAR, Smoke had 32 career victories, never the Daytona 500-level pre-Cup Chicago, and was the scene of a 32-race winless streak. Teammates Kyle Busch, 23, and Denny Hamlin, 27, have been far ahead of him in the classification of '08 Point.

Stewart won the 1997 championship the IndyCar Series while running five Busch Series races for JGR that year. Conducted in 22 events Busch in 98 before entering the time Winston Cup full series in 99. After a record for a rookie three wins in 99, has won at least three times in each season, but two winning twice each in 2003 and '04. The team's championship was in '02 and '05.

One competitor more intense in racing history, tempestuous, Tony has had his share of scrapes and fights and is always quick with a good quote or a sincere comment. The oft-cited statement that Dale Earnhardt Inc. would become a museum to Dale Jr. 's departure is being widely distributed.

The reasons for the separation of Stewart are friendly, if not mutual. I wanted to be a landlord, either full or part-that was not an option in JGR. Therefore, solicited and obtained, after a statement rotation into an extension of the Gibbs family went unheeded.

The rest we can say is the future.
